With over 30 years of experience in the winemaking industry, Archard Kato is the visionary founder and driving force behind Alko Vintages. As Chief Vintner, he leads with a unique blend of deep technical expertise and a sharp business instinct—designing elegant, practical solutions to complex challenges across the vineyard and beyond.

An accomplished Process Engineer and alumnus of the University of Dar es Salaam, Archard’s passion for winemaking was sparked in the late 1980s during his time as a researcher at the Makutupora Viticultural Research Centre. There, he not only discovered his love for viticulture but also developed his skills in vinification.

Archard went on to study winemaking at the State Institute of Viticulture and Winemaking in Veitshöchheim, Würzburg, Germany. He further expanded his expertise with training in tropical winemaking at Kasetsart University in Thailand, and through short courses in renowned wineries across South Africa and Italy.

Today, Archard is the creative mind behind many of our signature brands, and a respected pioneer in Tanzania’s wine industry.

Alfred Mushaki is a pioneering figure in Tanzania’s wine industry and a driving force behind the rise of Alko Vintages Ltd, one of the country’s leading wine producers. With a career spanning over three decades, Alfred combines deep industry knowledge, entrepreneurial drive, and a passion for Tanzanian-grown excellence.

He earned his Advanced Diploma in Procurement Management from the College of Business Education (C.B.E), Dodoma branch, in 1991. Shortly after, he began his professional journey at Inns of Africa Ltd, a company operating touristic hotels under The Railway Corporation, where he worked from 1991 to 1995. These early experiences laid the groundwork for his understanding of both procurement systems and the service-driven nature of consumer industries.

In 1995, Alfred co-founded Alko Enterprises, where he was instrumental in the market entry and brand penetration of early local wine products such as Dompo and Altar. His efforts helped introduce and popularize these products in the Tanzanian market, laying a strong foundation for the development of a domestic wine culture.

In 2000, Alko Enterprises evolved into Alko Vintages Company Ltd, marking a new chapter focused on quality, scale, and sustainability. Alfred took a leading role in shaping the company’s operational strategy. Through hands-on involvement and continuous learning—including specialized training in enology in countries like Italy and South Africa—he brought international best practices in winemaking to Dodoma’s vineyards.

Today, Alfred Mushaki stands as a respected industry leader whose vision and dedication have shaped the Alko Vintages we know—a winery rooted in community, innovation, and pride in Tanzanian craftsmanship.

As Co-Founding Director of Alko Vintages, Hilda Kato plays a pivotal role in shaping the company’s operational and commercial landscape. She oversees the overall health of the business, ensuring that both administrative and strategic functions run seamlessly.

With a Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology from Greenwich University in the UK, Hilda joined Alko Vintages with a clear focus: to streamline and modernize its management systems. Her calm yet assertive leadership style, combined with a strong commitment to sustainability, has been instrumental in the company’s steady growth and success.

Her journey into winemaking began at Alko itself, where her curiosity quickly transformed into a deep passion. Since then, she has pursued extensive training in winery administration and business development, including specialized courses in South Africa, China, and Italy. She also holds a Certification in Microsoft Database Administration from Delhi, India, reflecting her strength in integrating technology into business operations.

Today, Hilda stands at the intersection of innovation and tradition—driving the business forward while honoring the craft of winemaking.

General Manager
A Journey to the Classiest Heights

With over 18 years of experience in textile manufacturing, spinning, and operations management across India and East Africa, Shiju R. K. brings a wealth of technical expertise and leadership to his role as General Manager at Alko Vintages. Since joining the winery, Shiju has overseen end-to-end operations—spanning production, quality control, maintenance, HR, procurement, and administration—ensuring that each department functions efficiently and in harmony with the company’s strategic goals.

Shiju’s foundation in textile technology and his MBA in Marketing and Textile Management gives him a rare blend of engineering precision and commercial insight. Prior to joining Alko Vintages, he led major production units across Tanzania and India, consistently improving output, streamlining processes, and managing large cross-functional teams of up to 800 employees.

At Alko Vintages, Shiju plays a critical role in optimizing production capacity and maintaining quality standards that meet both domestic and export market requirements. Known for his hands-on leadership style, deep technical knowledge, and calm approach to problem-solving, Shiju is instrumental in driving operational excellence and supporting the winery’s continued growth and innovation.

Shaping Signature Wines with Science and Soul

Frank Kato leads the winemaking craft at Alko Vintages with precision and passion. As both Head Winemaker and Cellar Master, he is at the helm of the entire vinification process—from fermentation and ageing to the final expression in every bottle.

A graduate of the University of Manitoba in Canada, Frank brings a deep fascination with physics and process science into his winemaking approach. Describing himself as a natural problem solver, he thrives in the balance between the unpredictability of fermentation and the creativity of crafting unique blends.

Despite his young age, Frank has spent over five years mastering the complexities of winemaking. His work is driven by a desire to create wines that carry a bold African signature—distinctive, authentic, and expressive of local terroir.

Under his direction, Alko Vintages continues to push the boundaries of innovation while staying grounded in tradition.

Our operations Manager is a seasoned Community Development expert with a specialization in Project Planning and Management. With over 15 years of experience in social marketing and health project management, he brings extensive expertise in external communications and Social Behavior Change Communication (SBCC).

He possesses in-depth knowledge of health management systems and policy frameworks, and is particularly skilled in managing strategic partnerships. His strengths include the development and implementation of operational policies and procedures that ensure efficiency and effectiveness across departments.

Additionally, he has specialized experience in overseeing international operational systems, processes, and infrastructure, constantly seeking opportunities for improvement and innovation to enhance organizational performance.

Since joining the company in 2015, she has played a key role in driving sales growth, expanding market reach, and strengthening relationships with distributors and retail partners across the region.

Olivia’s journey at Alko Vintages has been marked by her deep understanding of customer needs and her hands-on approach to team leadership. Her accountancy training gives her a unique edge in sales forecasting, pricing strategy, and margin optimization. Over the years, she has contributed significantly to the company’s market share in both domestic and cross-border markets, helping to position Alko Vintages as a leading player in the East African wine industry.

Known for her commitment, resilience, and results-driven mindset, Olivia continues to champion customer-centric solutions and agile sales strategies that support the winery’s long-term vision.

Franklin Rutayungulwa leads Alko Vintages’ production team with a rare blend of technical expertise and hands-on winery experience. Though he holds an Advanced Diploma in Software Engineering, Franklin found his true calling in agricultural value addition—particularly in the art and science of winemaking.

His journey in the industry began at Alko Vintages, where he developed a deep appreciation for wine production under the mentorship of renowned South African winemaker and consultant, Mr. Lourens Smith. This early exposure shaped his commitment to quality and operational excellence.

Franklin has since undergone extensive training in South Africa, with a focus on bottling, wine storage, and winery operations. Today, he ensures that every stage of production—from grape reception to final packaging—is executed with accuracy, efficiency, and care.

Frida Kato serves as the Head of Finance at Alko Vintages, where she brings analytical depth and financial insight to the core of our business operations. With a keen eye for numbers and patterns, Frida has been instrumental in steering the company’s strategic decisions through robust market analysis and profitability tracking.

She holds a Master’s degree in Economics, Finance, and Management from the University of Bristol, UK, and a Bachelor’s (Hons) in Business Management from the University of Bedfordshire. Her academic foundation, combined with her practical acumen, makes her a key player in aligning Alko’s financial goals with its growth trajectory.

Frida’s passion for data and business intelligence is matched by her growing interest in winemaking. She has undertaken high-level trainings in oenology and wine business management in both Italy and South Africa—giving her a well-rounded understanding of the industry from grape to ledger.

With a background in Environmental Science and Management from Ardhi University in Dar es Salaam, Alicia further honed her expertise in quality control through specialized studies in Laboratory Technology at leading wineries and laboratories in South Africa. Her meticulous approach ensures that nothing leaves the facility without thorough analysis and absolute satisfaction.

Alicia’s passion for product excellence is unmatched, and her leadership in quality processes and laboratory management is a cornerstone of Alko Vintages’ commitment to superior wines.
