At Alko Vintages, we believe that agribusiness is a powerful tool for sustainable development. Since our founding, we have committed to empowering communities across Tanzania — not only by producing fine wine, but by transforming viticulture into a reliable source of income and opportunity for small-scale farmers.
Our Commitment to Farmers
For over a decade, we have invested in supporting more than 1,200 smallholder farmers across 30+ villages in the Dodoma Region. These farmers — many of whom previously relied on subsistence farming — now grow grapes for winemaking as part of a thriving Contract Farming Program.
We see viticulture as a high-potential venture, particularly well-suited to Dodoma’s semi-arid climate. With the rising global demand for wine, grape farming in Tanzania has become not only viable but truly transformational.
The Alko Contract Farming Model
Through our partnership program, we provide:
- Grape seedlings and farm inputs to ensure healthy vine development
- Extension services and field support from agronomists and viticulture experts
- Training in best practices for grape farming, vineyard management, and financial literacy
- A guaranteed market for grapes, ensuring stable and predictable income for farmers
Farmers are organized into village-based groups, making it easier for us to deliver training, monitor progress, and promote sustainable agricultural practices. Many of our partner farmers are now producing high-quality grape yields and earning consistent income to support their families.
