Mr. Kato a Process Engineer gaduate from The University of Dar es salaam, whose love for viticulture and fine wine inspired the idea of a winery.

Our Story
A b o u t A l k o V i n t a g e s
Rooted in the Land. Crafted for the World.
Alko Vintages is a proudly homegrown winery based in Tanzania’s Central Region — the heart of East Africa’s emerging wine country. Founded by Process Engineer Archard Kato in the late 1990s, the winery was born from a passion for grapes, fine wine, and the dream of building a world-class Tanzanian wine industry.
From humble beginnings as Alko Enterprises, the company was officially registered as Alko Vintages Company Limited in 2007. Today, it stands as the second-largest winery in Tanzania, known for its commitment to quality, innovation, and community empowerment.
Crafting Wines with Purpose
Our wines begin in the red-soiled vineyards of Dodoma, where tropical grape varieties thrive under unique weather conditions. Most of our grapes are grown by small-scale farmers — many from the Gogo (Wagogo) tribe — who have embraced viticulture as a part of their evolving agricultural tradition. These family-owned vineyards are semi-organic, cultivated by hand, and irrigated with spring waters from the Eastern Arc Mountains of Udzungwa.
Guided by generations of knowledge and a commitment to sustainable farming, our farmers help produce the bold, richly flavoured wines that Alko Vintages is celebrated for.
African Spirit in Every Sip
From vineyard to bottle, our wines reflect a spirit of resilience, craftsmanship, and cultural pride. Fermented in modern, temperature-controlled environments and refined with creative flair, each bottle speaks of the land it comes from — and the people who make it possible.
Our winemaking team includes over 50 professionals trained in Germany, Italy, and South Africa, and we are proudly supported by expert oenologists from France, Italy, and South Africa. Together, we combine global expertise with local excellence.

Inspired by the philosophy of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, we believe in education for self-reliance. Our model blends entrepreneurship, tradition, and knowledge-sharing to help build thriving communities — one vine at a time.
Alko Vintages is proudly Tanzanian — growing more than grapes, nurturing more than wine.
